Welcome Zenzile Street upgrade complete

The City of Cape Town’s Transport Infrastructure Implementation Department has completed the roadworks to improve the bend along Welcome Zenzile Street in Khayelitsha. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas visited the site earlier today, 11 July 2023, to see the work that has been done. 

The City has implemented this bend improvement at Welcome Zenzile Street in Khayelitsha to address the road safety concerns raised by the community. The old bend did not meet the safety needs of pedestrians and vehicular traffic, and therefore the road widening was implemented.

The project also offered local employment opportunities to eight residents.

The team removed and replaced the existing kerbs, channels and edging along this portion of Welcome Zenzile Street and widened the road bend and relocated sidewalk; resurfaced the road and installed concrete bollards and road signs along this bend.

'Road safety is one of the Urban Mobility Directorate's top priorities. I am grateful that our teams have responded to the community's concerns and have completed the necessary work to widen this corner along Welcome Zenzile Street. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will now be accommodated more comfortably around this bend,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. 

The road links two communities in Kuyasa in Khayelitsha who were previously separated by a stormwater channel. Welcome Zenzile Street facilitates access between the two areas.
